On April 8, 2020 the State of Michigan reported 20,346 COVID-19 confirmed cases, which equates to 203.7 cases per 100,000 in the State of Michigan. Cases continue to rise both in the State as a whole and throughout the counties The City of Detroit reported 5,824 cases on April 8, which was higher than any number of cases throughout the counties in Southeastern Michigan. The Wayne County numbers in the chart exclude the number of cases in Detroit; the State reported there were 3,569 cases in Wayne County on April 8. Also according to the State, there were 4,007 cases in Oakland County and 2,626 in Macomb County.

While the three largest counties in the State, and the largest city, each have confirmed number of COVID-19 cases soaring above 2,000, Washtenaw, Livingston, Monroe and St. Clair counties each have 140 cases or less. In total, the number of confirmed cases in Washtenaw, Livingston, Monroe and St. Clair counties combined do not total 1,000, according to the most recent data from the State.

In addition to the raw data of confirmed cases, we also show in the fourth chart the percent change in the number of cases reported day-to-day. The largest percent change thus far reported was on March 19 at 320 percent-this increase was also likely related to an increase in  the number of available tests. Also the 0 percent change on March 28 reflects that the data reported from the day prior did not change; it is unlikely that no new cases were reported that day. On April 8 the percent change from April 7 was 7.25 percent, a decrease the day’s prior change of 16.23 percent. Additionally, a 7.25 percent change is the lowest one recorded so far, with the exception of the 0 reported due to a repetition of data. 

It was reported by the State of Michigan that on April 8 the total of COVID-19 deaths reached 959. This was a percent change of 13.49 percent from April 7, a continued decrease from the 16.23 percent the day prior and the 17.8 percent change from April 5 to April 6. The 959 total deaths reported for April 8 was 114 deaths higher than what was reported on April 4. On April 7 there were 118 deaths reported by the State for that day, so the April 8 data of 114 new deaths shows a small decrease in the number of daily deaths related to COVID-19.

Also on April 8 it was reported by the State that were 251 COVID-19 related deaths in the City of Detroit, 234 in Oakland County, 195 in Wayne County (excluding Detroit) and 141 in Macomb County. There have been zero reported deaths in Monroe County, 2 in Livingston County, 3 in St. Clair County and 13 in Washtenaw County.

**Note-the 0 percent change on March 28 reflects that the data reported from the day prior did not change; it is unlikely that no new cases were reported that day.**

Although the number of confirmed cases and deaths continue to rise, the small decrease in the number of daily deaths between April 7 and April 8, along with the decline in the day-to-day percent change for the number of cases and deaths may be a sign that the spread is beginning to slow. Further observation of the data will only show if that is true.
